The Monkey Table

One of the often-repeated legends about the first well-known stonemason of Beit Jala, Jabra Saba, tells the story of his time working on a house in Bethlehem. During the project, he kept pestering the French architect for his next assignment. The architect, tired of being asked, eventually blurted out: “Go make a monkey” – a task which the eager artisan set himself to, and promptly delivered to the exasperated architect. The Monkey Table is inspired by this wonderful story, and you can see motifs both of the monkey’s tail and from the stonework of the house across the legs of the piece.
