Dheisheh refugee camp

The pieces were embroidered by seven Palestinian artisans from the Dheisheh refugee camp in Bethlehem—Hajar Al-Issa, Hiyam Al-Issa, Manar Jafal, Amal Jafal, Hiba Jafal, Alya Abu Salem, and Kifah Taysir—who, working from their homes, transformed the cross-stitch tradition passed down from mothers and grandmothers into intricate designs that tell the story of Palestine.
